POA can be paid only according to the stipulations in the POA document itself. You should have a strong document, probably done by attorney, that lays out your fees and costs.
It is illegal for a POA, who is a person serving a legal Fiduciary Duty to the person appointing them, to enrich themselves, and to receive pay other than that stipulated by the document.

No, AlvaDeer it does not have to be stipulated in the POA document. My father's was done by a lawyer. There was no mention of any kind of POA financial compensation in that document.
I went to the probate court. That's how I found out that every POA and/or conservator is entitled to be paid for their services. There are limits of course.
Every time I had to miss a day of work, I billed for my missed work hours which were not paid by my employer.
Every nursing home meeting I had to attend. Every phone call, voicemail, and automated recording I had to listen to were also paid.
I still got paid to be POA after my father was in the nursing home. I was still acting on his behalf as POA, so the greedy nursing home didn't get every penny of his income every month. He had other bills too. I was a bill. It was all legal too.

For what purposes are the trips? Visits? Are they related to financial or other decisions? Is the POA a durable one, or is it springing (i.e., contingent on a designated event)? Are you operating pursuant to it now?

Yes, you are entitled to gas money if you are going to the nursing home on business as the POA. The probate court in the town where the nursing home is will tell you how much a POA is allowed to charge for services and for travel expenses.
