I'm heading over to the hospital later to see my Dad. The doctor told us he needs a high calorie high protien diet to get his strength back up. They said fat and moderate sugar are OK right now. He is not diabetic or overweight. The food at the hospital is pretty good but I wanted to bring him some enticing treats to have on hand. He loves ice cream and I'm going to bring him a vanilla shake but I would love some ideas for non perishable munchies. His teeth are a problem right now so nothing too crunchy or hard to chew. Oh and he HATES Ensure or anything like that. Thanks

Kashi makes a lot of really good snack bars... one of my favorites is the "dark mocha almond bar." It doesn't taste like your usual bland organic type bar. It comes in a box of 6 bars and is reasonably priced. website: kashi/our-foods/snack-bars/kashi-chewy-granola-bars-dark-mocha-almond

How about some nuts, I give my dad protein bars he thinks they are candy that are high in protein and low in sugar.. You really have to look at the labels on those.

Hard boiled egg, in a zip lock bag with ice. Peanut butter and a spoon. If you can leave him a small thermal bag or ice chest with those frozen plastic ice blocks, you could do cheese, rolled salami with a tad of cream cheese, ham and swiss roll-ups......most protein needs refrigeration. Good luck and well wishes for Dad.

What are his favourite snacks? I'd worry less about specific nutritional values and concentrate on getting things he really really likes - any food will plump him up nicely if he's eating plenty of it! And he gets a lift to the spirits at the same time. Not so much, mind you, that it spoils his appetite for square meals; and there a bottle of ketchup or salad cream might help him clear his plate. Gourmets can look away now!

Cheese and peanut butter anything. They make all kinds of soft energy bars with peanut butter and whey proteins, etc.

We use a shake for my mom called "Weight Gainer". It 's 750 calories a shake and filled with protein and healthy fats. I got it from a health food store with a large nutrition section. You can add regular milk but we like coconut dream coconut milk. I bet you could mix it with Ensure for added calories and protein.

Atkins protein drinks/shakes are high in protein and low in sugar. Served cold, I think they taste better than Ensure.

The hospital should stock a whole variety of things for this dietary need. Ask them about a "magic cup" that fits that need exactly. It is fine for you to bring things, but also talk to his nurse.
